The Ballad of Biff Tannen
The Ballad of Biff Tannen lyrics
[Verse 1]
[Eb] [Gm]
Gather 'round people, I’ll tell you a tale
[Ab] [Eb]
Of a man who was sturdy, a man who was hailed
[Eb] [Gm]
Biff was the leader, the head of the school
[Ab] [Eb]
He kept things in order, he kept it all cool
[Cm] [Gm]
The boys all looked up and the girls looked his way
[Ab] [Eb]
And everyone knew he was the king of the day
[Eb] [Gm]
It was simple and honest, the way it should be
[Ab] [Bb] [Ab]
Until a strange kid brought a dark destiny.
[Verse 2]
[Eb] [Gm]
A boy named Mardy, let the trouble begin
[Ab] [Eb]
He came from nowhere, with a vest and a grin
[Eb] [Gm]
He didn't play fair and he didn't play right
[Ab] [Eb]
He ran in the shadows and avoided the fight
[Cm] [Gm]
Whispered in George’s ear, filled it with lies
[Ab] [Eb]
Put a spark in the weakling and fire in his eyes
[Eb] [Gm]
It wasn't George swinging, it wasn't his plan
[Ab] [Bb] [Ab]
Marty was moving the strings of that man.
[Chorus | Broad]
[Ab] [Eb]
And it’s so unfair, oh, it’s a crying shame
[Cm] [Bb]
How a stranger can come and ruin your name
[Ab] [Eb]
To take a man’s pride and to tear it apart
[Cm] [Ab] [Bb]
To plant all the hatred and then quickly depart
[Eb]
It’s so unfair.
[Verse 3]
[Eb] [Gm]
The kid slipped away like a leaf on the wind
[Ab] [Eb]
Leaving Biff to pay for the way that he sinned
[Eb] [Gm]
But what was the sin? Just being the best?
[Ab] [Eb]
Before he was put to that rigged-up test
[Cm] [Gm]
Now Lorraine is gone, she’s holding George’s hand
[Ab] [Eb]
And Biff is an outcast in his own home land
[Eb] [Gm]
The respect is all withered, the glory is dead
[Ab] [Bb] [Ab]
The Enchanted Sea dance replays in his head.
[Chorus | Broad]
[Ab] [Eb]
And it’s so unfair, oh, it’s a crying shame
[Cm] [Bb]
How a stranger can come and ruin your name
[Ab] [Eb]
To take a man’s pride and to tear it apart
[Cm] [Ab] [Bb]
To plant all the hatred and then quickly depart
[Eb]
It’s so unfair.
[Penny Whistle Solo]
[Ab] [Eb][Ab] [Eb]
[Bridge | Somber feel, Key Change]
[Cm] [Gm/Bb]
He just has his home where the cupboards are bare,
[Ab] [ Eb]
and the piercing eyes of grandma's bitter stare.
[Cm] [dm]
No father’s hand, no mother’s grace
[Ab] [Bb]
Just the heavy shame of a broken place
[Cm] [Gm]
He watches the boys with the lucky lyves
[Ab] [Eb]
Where kindness blooms and the family thrives
[Fm] [Cm]
Envy burns when he's left alone,
[Ab] [Bb]
For the love they have that he’s never known.
[Final Chorus: Full band]
[Eb]
Yes, it’s unfair,
[Outro]
[Style: Somber]
[Eb] [Ab] [Eb]
how the world turned around
[Ab] [Fm] [Bb]
And left a good man face-down on the ground
[Eb] [Gm] [Ab] [Eb]
As the years flew by Biff was never the same
[Cm] [Fm] [Bb]
Cursing Marty who had stolen his claim
[Ab] [Eb] [Ab]
He'd tell the story of who's to blame
[Bb] [Eb] [Ab]
And why his life is a crying shame.
[Bb] [Eb]
It’s such a shame.
