What an M4A from Suno is
M4A is the MPEG-4 audio container; inside it Suno stores the song as AAC, the same codec used by Apple Music and YouTube. It is the format Suno's own Download dialog labels "M4A" and the one every public song page streams to your browser, so it is the closest thing to a master that exists for a Suno track. Occasionally a song streams as WebM (Opus) instead; the tool saves whichever Suno serves, with the right extension.
Choosing Original means the bytes are passed through untouched. Every other format here — MP3, WAV — is derived from this file, so the M4A is both the smallest download and the one with no generational loss.
When to keep the M4A
- Archiving. If you want one copy of a song to keep, keep the original; you can always make an MP3 or WAV from it later, but never the other way round.
- Apple devices and modern players. iPhone, Mac, Android, VLC, Spotify local files and every current browser play M4A natively.
- Re-uploading. Platforms that accept AAC/M4A (YouTube, Instagram, most DAWs) get the cleanest input without a second lossy encode.
Pick MP3 instead when the target is a car stereo or an older device that only knows MP3, and WAV when you are about to edit the audio.
Limits, rights and Suno's own M4A button
Only public songs can be read — the tool never signs in to Suno and cannot see private or unpublished tracks. Suno's own Download → M4A gives you the same file but is limited per plan (7 lifetime on Free, 20 a month on Pro, 60 on Premier) and, on paid plans, carries the commercial licence; downloads here are for personal use and never touch that allowance. Suno M4A Download FAQ
Is M4A the same as MP4?
They share the container format. M4A holds audio only; MP4 usually holds video too. Suno's M4A is the audio stream, Suno's MP4 is that same audio with the cover art as a video track.
What bitrate is Suno's M4A?
Suno does not publish it and it varies by song and model version. Whatever it is, the tool passes the stream through unchanged, so Original is always the most faithful copy available — MP3 and WAV are made from it.
Why did I get a .webm file instead?
Some songs are served by Suno as WebM (Opus audio) rather than M4A. The tool saves the file Suno actually serves and names the extension accordingly. Choose MP3 or WAV if you need a specific container.
Does Original use less quota than MP3?
No difference. One song counts once per day here in any format; Original simply skips the conversion step so the download starts faster.
