Style

Romantic Andalusian orchestral flamenco, close dry studio sound; virtuoso nylon-string guitar with rasgueado, golpe and tremolo, answering Moroccan oud, solo violin, cello, warm strings, acoustic bass, castanets, palmas and frame drums; two distinct voices, dark rough warm Spanish-accented baritone and crystalline lyric-spinto soprano, clipped rhythmic staccato phrasing, touch of vocal slapback echo; intimate triple-meter serenade building through an ecstatic dramatic crescendo, ominous guitar-and-oud coda.

Lyrics

Elvira, in your eyes I see

The heaven I have long denied;

If God himself has placed me here,

What power could tear me from your side?

VERSE 2 — DON FÉLIX, MALE BARITONE

MORE PASSIONATE — EXPRESSIVE FLAMENCO PHRASING

THE GUITAR BECOMES MORE RHYTHMIC

Give me your hand and have no fear,

My word is strong as tempered steel;

I'll take you first to be my bride,

Then grant you all your heart can feel.

VERSE 3 — DON FÉLIX, MALE BARITONE

PROUD, MAGNIFICENT DECLARATION

VIOLIN ENTERS WITH SWEEPING COUNTERMELODY

The towers of Salamanca

Shall witness when our vows are made;

And even night's most secret darkness

Shall turn to white before it fades.

CHORUS — ELVIRA, FEMALE SOPRANO

PURE, LUMINOUS OPERATIC VOICE

SOARING BEL CANTO LEGATO

COMPLETELY TRUSTING AND PASSIONATELY IN LOVE

Tell me it's true, and I'll believe,

Tell me the air you breathe is mine.

No corner of my heart is free

From you, dear Félix, love divine.

INSTRUMENTAL — 4 BARS

PASSIONATE FLAMENCO GUITAR AND SOLO VIOLIN

OUD ANSWERS IN ARABIC-ANDALUSIAN ORNAMENTS

PALMAS AND FRAME DRUM BUILD THE PULSE

VERSE 4 — DON FÉLIX, MALE BARITONE

DEEPER, MORE INSISTENT, IRRESISTIBLY PERSUASIVE

POWERFUL SPANISH GUITAR RASGUEADO

Give me your hand and have no fear,

My word is strong as tempered steel;

I'll take you first to be my bride,

Then grant you all your heart can feel.

INSTRUMENTAL WARNING — 8 BARS

NO SINGING

SOLO VIOLIN REVEALS A DARKER MELODY

THE LYING LOVER'S HONEYED PROMISES

ELVIRA STILL BELIEVES

LOW CELLOS — SINISTER OUD

FRAGILE GUITAR HARMONICS

BRIEF SUDDEN SILENCE

VERSE 5 — DON FÉLIX, MALE BARITONE

THE WEDDING PROMISE RETURNS

PASSIONATE, COMMANDING, ALMOST TRIUMPHANT

The towers of Salamanca

Shall witness when our vows are made;

And even night's most secret darkness

Shall turn to white before it fades.

CLIMAX — ELVIRA, FEMALE SOPRANO

MAGNIFICENT HIGH NOTES

BRILLIANT OPERATIC RESONANCE

ORCHESTRAL STRINGS SWELL

FULL FLAMENCO PERCUSSION

Tell me it's true!

CODA — DON FÉLIX, MALE BARITONE

THE ORCHESTRA DISAPPEARS

LOW, INTIMATE, DANGEROUSLY TENDER

ONLY GUITAR AND OUD

My word is strong as tempered steel...

Of steel...

FINAL LOW GUITAR CADENCE

COMPLETE SILENCE
