I move toward the light.

My hands shake on the stone.

The more I learn of people,

The higher these walls grow.

I lay them one by one.

Cold burns.

Hands numb.

Still building something

From the things I can’t outrun.

I used to drift without a course,

No shore.

No sign.

Just black water underneath

And no light I could find.

One brick.

One more.

Leave a light.

Leave a door.

So I build these walls into a tower,

Lift a little fire above

For anyone still on the water

With no one waiting up.

In a boat,

On a raft,

With the shoreline out of view.

I was there.

I know that fear.
