He said “You’ve been asleep for a hundred years.”

I said “Perdante! That’s-a not-a my fault!” He said “That’s-a not-a my problem.”

I said “I’m-a ready!” He said “Your kimono is out of stock.”

SFX: scanner beep; error sound

Delivery: defensive, then cracking, then quiet

SFX: neon flicker

The future said “That’s cute, goose. We don’t have time.”

Delivery: robot voice, cold

Your kung fu is analog. Your honk is obsolete.

Your shadow is a program now. Your loss is... complete.

SFX: shadow boots up as a hologram; dry digital whisper

Delivery: goose, small, close-mic

…So I’m Perdante in every century?

SFX: total silence; one drop of sweat hits the metal floor

Delivery: old toad sage, crackly, distant, like a recording

The swamp is gone. The river too.

But the goose... the goose remains.

SFX: old tape rewind; bamboo pipe echo

Delivery: goose, vulnerable, then rising into a scream

Same wet kimono... same sweaty beak... same PERDANTE!

SFX: single gong; cryo-pod explodes open; robots gasp; wings flap
