Hold Me Softly

Dust on the window frame, quiet in the hall

Watching the streetlights flicker on the wall

We used to talk until the morning turned to blue

Now I'm just searching for a ghost I thought I knew

You sit across the room, a million miles away

With all the heavy words we’re both too tired to say

I watch the shadows fall across your folded hands

We built a fragile house on shifting river sands

I see the quiet suit line sitting by the door

You’re packing up the life we don't live anymore

And every ticking clock is pulling us apart

Counting down the seconds of a breaking heart

So hold me softly, hold me close,

Rest your lips against my skin

Take me to that quiet place

Where the peace is folding in

Whisper low into the dark

Lie and say you’ll never go

Catch me as the floor gives way

Before the morning starts to show

You wrap your arms around me like a final grace

A gentle shadow lingering in an empty space

I feel the pulse inside your chest against my own

Knowing that tomorrow I’ll be left here alone

You promise not to leave me out here in the cold

To keep the memories of us before we both grew old

When sunrise breaks through the window pane

My world will wash away beneath the heavy rain

I’ll stand among the ruins of the life we made

Watching every golden dream begin to fade

But just for three more minutes, pretend that I’m required

Tell me that you need me, tell me you’re just tired

Hold me softly, hold me close,

Rest your lips against my skin

Take me to that quiet place

Where the peace is folding in

Whisper low into the dark

Lie and say you’ll never go

Catch me as the floor gives way

Before the morning starts to show

Fool me one last time tonight...

Lie and say I’m still your home...

Hold me softly, hold me close...

Hold me softly, hold me close...
