I Went Anyway

They say don't go to the crossroads

Not when the clock strikes twelve

I went anyway

I knew exactly what I came for

I pinned up my coat and braided my hair

I knew what I wanted and where

They said leave it alone, leave it be

Said nothing good waits there for me

I smiled at their warnings, folded them neat

And walked to the place where the three roads meet

The wind stopped its breathing

The stars held their breath

The ground had a heartbeat

That sounded like death

I stand at the crossroads

Where the three worlds meet

The cold finds my fingers

The frost finds my feet

Something is coming

And it knows me whole

Something is changing

Deep in my soul

And I don't turn back

And I don't turn back

I'd carried it long enough

Carried it far

The weight of the woman I'd been

Left a scar

I came here to leave her

That small frightened thing

I came here to find out

What leaving could bring

It came like the wind comes

Before the storm breaks

It came like the silence

Before the earth shakes

It asked me no questions

It needed no why

It only asked one thing

And I said goodbye

I stand at the crossroads

Where the three worlds meet

The cold finds my fingers

The frost finds my feet

Something has changed now

Down to the bone

Something has answered

I'm not alone

And I don't turn back

And I don't turn back

(And I don't turn back)

(And I don't turn back)

They say don't go to the crossroads

Not when the clock strikes twelve

I went

I got what I came for

I'm still here

But I'm not
